YUTC Course Preview

Mill Creek Park was established in 1891 by Volney Rogers, a Youngstown attorney. It is the second largest metropolitian park in the United States.

The Parapet Bridge, constructed in 1913, is located on the east side of Lake Glacier in Mill Creek Park. Architect and landscape designer Julius Schweinfurth created this striking masterpiece of massive upright boulders and a graceful arch. From the four viewing platforms, visitors can look east to Spring Brook Ravine and west to Lake Glacier.

You will be running under the bridge and to your left, with Lake Glacier on your right.

A blurry pic of the approach to the infamous Love Log.

After the Love Log, a little run on the rest of the  Monkey Trails, up Rainbow Hill, back into woods, across Pinball Ridge and down to the road.

Hop across the road and back next to the water, heading for the Covered Bridge and Lanterman's Mill.

When you see the beginning of the boardwalk, you are approaching Lanternman's Mill and the Covered Bridge, where the Aid Station will be set up.

At the end of the 18th century the land surrounding a beautiful, natural waterfall, now known as Lanterman's Falls, belonged to John Young, founder of Youngstown.
The first mill was built of logs from the site. Millstones were cut from granite boulders found in the area of what is now Fifth Avenue at Rayen Avenue. This mill operated from 1799 to 1822.

In 1823 the original mill was replaced by a second mill. Built by Eli Baldwin, this frame structure served only as a gristmill. Baldwin's mill operated until 1843 when a flood washed it away. A grinding stone from this mill can still be seen resting in the creekbed 500 feet downstream of the Falls.

The current frame structure was built in 1845-46 by German Lanterman and his brother-in-law Samuel Kimberly. German and his wife Sally Ann owned a large tract of land around the Falls. Lanterman's Mill was the third mill constructed at the Falls and was used solely as a gristmill.

Lanterman's Mill was restored over a three year period, from 1982 to 1985.

You will then cross the Covered Bridge, where the Aid Station will be set up.

After you cross the Covered Bridge you will be running down the south side of the course, beside Lake Newpoort.

This is the southern end of the YUTC race course, around Lake Newport.

After you round the bottom end of Lake Newport, there is just one section of road to encounter, just less than one mile.

After you have crossed the Covered Bridge and started on the east side of the course, you will come across the Suspenion Bridge.

The Suspension Bridge, located on Valley Drive, was erected in 1895 and spans Mill Creek connecting the east and west sides of the park. Following the wishes of Volney Rogers to create fanciful park entrances, Charles Fowler of the Youngstown Bridge Company designed the structure.

Pioneer Pavilion, is one of the oldest structures in Youngstown, Ohio. Constructed in 1821, this sandstone building served as a mill for carding and fulling wool. The building was later used as a storeroom for the nearby Mill Creek Furnace, then remodeled for party use in 1893. In 1894, the woolen mill was officially named Pioneer Pavilion to honor its pioneer history.

The flagpole is a new addition at Pioneer Pavilion, dedicated 2011 to Gary L Nilsson.

This would be the view as you come out of the woods and make the left turn back down the drive to the Start/Finish Line at the Log Cabin.

Summer is Heating Up!

This was the 24th year of the Vermont Endurance 100 Mile Run.
VT100 runner & rider
The Vermont 100 Endurance Race is one of the original 100 mile runs in the USA and a part of the Grand Slam Series of Ultrarunning.    There is also a 100 Mile Endurance Ride happening concurrently with the footrace.

NEO TC members Desiree Cowie and Dave Peterman made the trip to Vermont for the footrace.

Des Cowie finished in 24.54.31, with Wild Bill Wagner pacing her the last thirty miles.

Dave Peterman had a very solid race, finishing in 20.23, with LT (Lloyd Thomas) pacing him.

Nice work, everyone!!

Back in Ohio, Dan Bellinger took home second in his age group, 2nd Grandmasters, in the "Dirty Mo" Trail Race, in Loudonville, Ohio, 1:55:09.

Farther up, in Northern Ohio, The Summer Meltdown 5K was held in Lakewood.

Heidi Finiff finished 3rd in her age group,  at 25.12

Gale Connor finished in 30.06

There was a "Bill Wagner" finishing the 5K also, but we're pretty sure Bill was in Vermont vs Lakewood.

Western States

The Western States Endurance Run, the race that started it all, begins this Saturday in Squaw Valley,California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. The trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850’s, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.

NEO TC runners are Dave Peterman (Bib 308)  and Ted Niemann (Bib 292)  in it to win it this year.

The Color Run

Julie Curtis at the finish line
The Cleveland Color 5K  Run was held June 16.

The Color Run pretty much has 2 SIMPLE rules. 1. White shirts (any mostly white T will work great) mandatory at the start line and 2. Color plastered EVERYTHING at the finish!  Runner/walkers begin the 5k at the start line like a brand new pristine coloring book, they end looking like they fell into a Willy Wonka… tie dyed… vat of colored goodness.

What is the Color?
Each kilometer of the event is associated with a designated color.  1k is yellow, 2k is blue, 3k is green, 4k is pink, and the 5k finish is a “Color Extravaganza.”  As the runners/walkers hit the Kilometer COLOR RUN Zones, they will be blitzed by our volunteers, sponsors, and staff with COLOR.  The color is a special “elf made” recipe of magical color dust.  All products are 100% natural and safe.  You can eat the stuff if you’d like (we have tried it and don’t suggest it, it is surprisingly high in calories and leaves a chalky aftertaste).

Sharyn Dimuzio at the finish line

Desiree Cowie at the finish line

Kind of a different "get dirty" mindshift.  Get "painty"?  Looks like all had fun!

Salt Run Challenge

We now have another finisher in the Salt Run Challenge.
On Thursday, June 14th Todd Hanks became the 2nd finisher, when he ran 10 laps of the trail in 6:29.

That gives Todd the 2nd fastest  time on that trail.
Slim, who completed this challenge back in April, is next to last with his effort.

Todd's only comment after he finished was that he was glad to not have to go up any more log steps.

Congrats to Baby Sasquatch at the Lakeview District Meet last week.
He ran in 4 events and advanced to the Regional Meet in all 4 races.

His first event was the 4x800 on Thursday, and his team took 3rd overall.
Baby Sasquatch was the anchor for the relay team and was in 5th place when he got the baton.
He was able to move up into 3rd place to secure a spot for the regional meet for him and his teammates.
(top 4 spots in each race advance)
Then he also ran the 800 and 4x400 pre-lims on Thursday and qualified for finals on Saturday.

Saturday his first event was the 1600.
The race ended up being a battle between Drake Sulzer from Woodridge and Baby Sasquatch.
With 150 to go Baby Sasquatch moved up on the outside on the far turn and then took the lead coming off the turn heading down the front stretch for the finish line.
With 40 meters to go Sulzer surged back, but Baby Sasquatch was able to get the lead back in the final meters of the race to win by 0.03 of a second in 4:28.41 to Sulzer's 4:28.44.

On to the 800 where Ryan Adams from CVCA took the early lead and everybody else was left chasing.
Baby Sasquatch was able to take 2nd place over Noah Lebay in 2:00.59 to Adams 1:58.80 and Lebay was 0.30 back with a 2:00.89 effort.

Last was the 4x400 where Baby Sasquatch was in the 3rd position on the team.
The Bulldogs were able to get 2nd place just ahead of a hard charging team from CVCA.
Liberty won the 4x400 with a stadium record time of 3:23.06, Lakeview ran 3:28.66, and CVCA finished in 3:29.11.

This weeks regional will take place in Bedford on the same schedule as last weeks meet, with Pre-lims on Thursday and then Finals on Saturday.
The top four from each event this week will advance to the State Meet in Columbus to run at the Jesse Owens Stadium at Ohio State University.

Good Luck to everyone in high school track looking to advance.

Slim Pickins' 2012 Sneak Preview

The SP2012 Run Committee is already making plans for this year’s event.
Due to the recent change in PA's Bear season, SP2012 will not be held in the Laurel Highlands.
We will allow the hunters their space and not be in the woods in PA on November 17th this year.
Instead SP2012 will be held in Coopers Rock State Park down in the WV.

This park is just east of Morgantown.
Link to park map here.
Not sure what Saturday’s run will involve this year, but as always, it will be a worthy challenge.
Loose plans call for camping in the campground at the park.
Start thinking about scheduling now so you can attend this event.

To participate in this event, you must be self-sufficient on trail and be able to self rescue if needed.
This event is not a race, but more of a group run where everyone is responsible for themselves.
You must be a member of NEOTC by the 2012 YUTC race date to participate, or else have a NEOTC sponsor member who is participating in the SP2012 Run vouch for you.

New NEOTC Challenge

After the Fools Run, some of us were out on a trail run and running our mouths as usual.
Some of us thought that ending the 50K with Salt Run was cruel and unusual punishment.
And the subject of new challenges for NEOTC came up.
What is better than ending a 50K with the hills of Salt Run?

Having the whole 50K on Salt Run!

So as usual when a stupid and pointless run is thrown out there, Jim Harris is ready to step up to the task to see if it can be done.

On April 19th Jim set out at 6:30 AM and started running laps on the Salt Run Trail.

Just after 1:00 PM he was done and completed the first running of the latest NEOTC Challenge.

Here are his splits for the day, in case you are contemplating this run and looking for data.

Lap 1   -  35:13     0:35:31
Lap 2   -  35:31     1:10:44
Lap 3   -  35:25     1:46:09
Lap 4   -  36:15     2:22:24
Lap 5   -  38:02     3:00:27
Lap 6   -  38:50     3:39:18
Lap 7   -  38:42     4:18:00
Lap 8   -  42:56     5:00:57
Lap 9   -  43:14     5:44:11
Lap 10 -  42:41     6:26:53

The trail is reported to be a little short of advertised distance and best guesstimate is that it is only a 5K around the loop.

If anyone else steps up to this challenge, please e-mail your time to Brian Musick and we will get a page going for the challenge.

Racing Results

Another good spring time round of racing.

Eric Harris PR'd at the 3200 distance, with a 9:55 finish for 3rd place, erasing 30+ seconds off his previous best time, at the Reinhart Relays in Stow.  For those not up on the details of Track, this was basically back to back sub 5 minute miles.
Best congratulation statement came from his older brother:
“Finally you didn’t suck today.”
                                                                             -Pinball

Mike Keller added the 10th state to his marathon and beyond race resume; he ran the Free State Trail Marathon in Kansas, finishing in 5.33.24.

Closer to home, ultrarunner Melissa Cairns was Race Director for the Inaugural "On My Own Two Feet" Marathon in Kent, Ohio.   5000 dollars was raised for this event. ALL proceeds benefit local shelters including Cleveland's Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center and Portage County's Safer Futures.

Kimba Love*Ottobre still needed a long run to check off before MMT.  Melissa had to change her course, 6 days before her event, onto hike a bike and dirt, so that was all Kimba needed to hear.  She chicked two guys in the last three miles and finished the marathon in 5.10.

The Admiral was also spotted at the event, he ran the 1/2 marathon in 2.18.  Mrs Admiral was slated to run also, but took a spill on the Thursday previous, turning an ankle.

Kimba also managed to share some trail time with fellow NEO TC runner Elizabeth Sosan. Elizabeth finished the 1/2 marathon in a nice 2.10 time.

NEO TC members Tara Schweitzer and Wild Bill Wagoner were volunteering this weekend, running the Aid Station at mile 7.5 and 21'ish for the marathon runners-it was a cold nasty day for volunteers, thanks for hanging out!

A late result from last weekend:  Coach Todd Hanks ran the "Run for Home" 1/2 Marathon in the Dover/New Philadelphia city, finishing in 1.45.33.

Race Directors Report Fools 25 and 50K

2012 Initial Report

Ideal weather and a fast trail greeted an event-record 300 runners at the 2012 Fools 50K & 25K Trail Run. With a mild Northeast Ohio winter and a saturated water table in the weeks leading to race day, no one expected a nearly dry trail on April Fools Day.

In the 50K race, Jonathan Hastings of Grove City (second place at the 2011 Fools 50K) took aim at the course record of 3:59:02 and held a six-minute lead by the halfway checkpoint splitting 25K in 1 hour, 51 minutes. A chase pack of four runners - Nathan Szabados, Jason Dashow, Stephen Zeidner, and Vince Rucci - arrived at 25K within a minute of each other and it appeared they were racing for second place. Hastings reached the mile-28 Kendall Lake aid station with an eight minute lead but suffered an energy depletion on the Salt Run trail.

For the second consecutive year, a twenty-two year-old captured the Fools Run 50K win. This year, Nathan Szabados of Cleveland won in a finish time of 4:02:43. Jeffery Day of Berea finished second place in 4:05:02 followed by Hastings in 4:05:52.

In the women's 50K, Serena Wilcox of Cambridge, Vermont, became the first out-of-state winner in the event's four-year history, finishing in 4:44:55. Eighteen year-old Rachel Raykov of Hudson finished second-place in 5:03:46 followed by Rachel Nypaver in 5:07:35.

Wade Caldwell of Kent (1:52:23) and Janet Edwards of Parkman (2:12:44) claimed victories in the 25k race.

An event-record 299 runners finished, including 177 in the 25K and 122 finished the entire 50K.

Northeast Ohio's trail and ultrarunner community was on full display as nearly 75 volunteers stepped up during race week and race day to help make the Fools Run a success. THANK YOU to each volunteer who gave part of their day.
