Coach Hanks Wins the Lordstown Apple Cider 5K !!
Congratulations to Todd Hanks, winner of the Lordstown Apple Cider 5K!
Todd's Race Report:
Brother called Saturday night and set up run for Sunday at Mill Creek. Early Sunday morning he calls and is too sore from YUTC and wants to take day off. OK with me as my knee was really sore Saturday and still pretty stiff in the morning. My wife wanted to post flyers of her race at Lordstown Apple Cider 5K so headed over there.
Decided to run it since I was there. Started running ½ hour before race and just kept going until race start.
Knee loosened up. No big guns in attendance. Group of three in lead pack. 2 by halfway and 1 after the 2 mile mark.
That 1 was me. Awesome feeling being alone chasing the police car. Turned into school parking lot with huge lead for last ¼ mile and people telling me to take it easy. Finished in 18:30 for a couple second PR and first ever victory.
Cherry on top of a great weekend.

Content Wanted!!!
Hey there all you NEO Trail Members,
This is a news blog for the members. This is where we like to toot our own horn, and recognize people for their accomplishments.
We need your help!
This is a news blog for the members. This is where we like to toot our own horn, and recognize people for their accomplishments.
We need your help!
Content is needed for the news blog.
Yes, that means news!!
We know some of yinz are headed out for a hippy dippy weekend in Michigan for the Woodstock Festival of Running; many of you will be running YUTC the next weekend.
How about writing a race report?
It doesn't have to be long.
It doesn't have to be grammatically correct.
But we want to feature YOU here on the blog.
Didn't run the race? Crewed for a buddy? Had an epic or funny or harrowing time? Worked an aid station? Hey, you could write about that. It's always cool hearing about other aspects of the race.
These don't have to be ultra events. Maybe you ran a 5K or a Tough Mudder or a Color Run. Want to tell us about it? Got pics (EVEN BETTER!!!) to share? We want to post it.
Okay, even if you don't want to write a race report, that is cool. But we would like to get your results out there. Kimba does her best job of stalking people on the interwebs but she needs your help. Send us your race results-where you went, how did you do.

The Ring
September has crept up on us, and it was time for an annual fun event for a few of the NEO TC members.
Well, "fun" is a relative term for The Ring.
The Ring is simply the 71 mile Massanutten Trail, in the Massanutten Mountains of Virginia. This is a FA event put on by the Virginia Happy Trails Club.
Only one rule of The Ring, "stay on Orange". The Massanutten 100 Trails Run uses most of the MMT Trail, with some added miles thrown in.
It appeared that the weather cooperated for The Ring. Hot and oppressive.
Results are here.
As far as NEOTC trail runners, Coach Hanks suffered like a dog in the humidity, and only made it 40.7 miles and had to drop at Edinburg Gap.
Todd was down 15 pounds total from his effort.
Slim made it back to Signal Knob Parking lot in roughly 23 1/2 hours.
As always a little suffering is a good thing.
Look up either of these guys and ask them about their experience, or any of the NEOTC runners who have completed the Ring and find out if this is your kind of an event.

North Country Trail Races
A few of the NEO TC members took a long trip up to Manistee, Michigan, to participate in the 13th year of the North Country Trail Races.
They were hoping for a bit of cooler weather, being in almost northern Michigan, but alas, it was the same as being at home in Ohio-race day was typical summer, high of 89, about corresponding humidity.
Julie Bowen Miller finished the marathon in 6 hours 49 minutes.
Kimba finished the 50 mile distance in 12 hours 16 minutes. Her race report is here.
There was a 1/2 marathon, marathon, and 50 mile distance at this event. The course was very runner friendly, consisting of mostly non-technical, sandy, runnable single track. Very well organized race and nice aid stations only 3 to 4 miles apart.

2012 Speece Triathlon
The Speece Family Triathlon was held this morning in South Jackson Township in NE Ohio.
The Speece Family has a picnic every August, and the morning of the picnic they have a triathlon.
The distances are approx. 400 meter swim, 12 mile bike, and then a 5K run.
This is the 3rd year that the Harris family has participated in this event.
Both Slim and Baby Sasquatch competed not just against the rest of the athletes, but had a little family competition going on as well.
Last year at the Mattapoisett Tri, Slim just edged out BS by 19 seconds.
That was not the case this year, as BS passed Slim on the run and ending up 2:29 in front.
The Speece Triathlon is held in memory of Steve Speece, and the proceeds go towards Pancreatic Cancer Research.
This is truly an inspiring event, and to listen to the pre-race briefing when they discuss Steve and what he represented and then to know that cancer touches almost every single one of us...
It truly is an emotional event.
Save a weekend in 2013 in August to fit this in.
You will be glad that you did.

Leadville is this weekend
Cheer on Dave Peterman, as he works on his high elevation race, Leadville 100. This is # 3 of 4 for the Grand Slam.
Popularly called "The Race Across the Sky". A very high elevation race- One hundred miles of extreme Colorado Rockies terrain — from elevations of 9,200 to 12,600 feet, at Hope Pass.
Leadville, Colorado is a very cool little town. For a cheap (and clean!!) place to stay, check out the Leadville Hostel. However, don't try to get a room there during any big event, whether it's the mountain bike race or foot race, the hostel is booked through 2014 for these weeks. But give Wild Bill a call, he may have room for you, and it's a cool place to stage out of for running/hiking 14'ers in the area.

Subsequent LT Challenge!
Nice work and congratulations to Dan Bellinger. He ran some loops on Saturday, on the Ledges Trail, and then came back and completed the Challenge on August 14, in the rain, in 6.44.
The Ledges Trail is the 1.75 mile loop of the Ledges in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. 18 loops will get you a 50K finish and a nice workout for the day.
We are now up to 8 finishers of the LT Challenge. We are still awaiting LT to get his finish in.!

Weekend Running
Running the Burning River 100 Mile Run the weekend before did not seem to slow down George Themelis. He placed first in his age group at the Independence 5K, completing that in 19.47.
Tim Knapp got his double in on Saturday also, running 20 miles at Mill Creek Park in the early morning on Saturday, then running the Salem Star Trax 5K with his son that evening, in 31.24.
Farther south, Teresa McCombs completed the 5 mile trail race, the Dirty Signal, in the Summit Metroparks, running that in 52.05.
Hot day for running Saturday. This was also the course familiarization/volunteer run at Mill Creek Park for the YUTC race. Despite the hot weather, about fifteen runners showed up for some loops around the park. Mileage ranged from one loop around the lakes, 12 miles, to Slim topping out his mileage about 40 miles.
