Oil Creek FA 50K Final Update

6 months ago many of enjoyed the fall colors of Oil Creek State Park and 6 months from now, many of us will head out for another or for our 1st OC buckle!

This Saturday, the Oil Creek FA 50K is all set to go. Here are some details/updates:

Luckily, not much, if any, snow is scheduled for the rest of the week and temps are hovering in the mid to upper 20s. Hopefully, that'll harden up the trail a bit from the warmth of the 30s over the past weekend and the rain. Right now, it's looking mighty fine for running on Saturday. Be prepared for plenty of wet feet, muddy trails, and slushy snow. A 2nd or 3rd pair of socks wouldn't be a bad idea with plenty of lube already on. Weather Forecast

Start Time: 7am from the Titusville Middle School parking lot, the same location as race headquarters on race weekend this October

Google Map to TMS

This is a FA (fat-ass) and it will stay true to that. "No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps" Carry what you need and be prepared. For me, I plan on wearing my Nathan pack filled with water and some Heed electrolyte powder to make up drinks along the way. I may drop some aid at Petroleum Center, 1/2 way around the 50K loop. There is a pavilion there that serves as a very patriotic aid station during the Oil Creek Trail Runs. For those of you definitely making the whole trek around, this is an option. Leave things there or stash/hide at your own risk. Here is a Google link to Petroleum Center...easy to stop en route to Titusville if approaching Titusville from the south.

Recommendation: let's all stay together at least until we get to the trail. There are a few miles of asphalt in the beginning and those unfamiliar with the area may not find the trail if left behind. Once on the trail, just follow those yellow blazes. Leave nothing but footprints and take plenty of pictures!

Afterwards, please join us at Perk Place Cafe. Perk Place's owner was both a 50K runner in 2009 and sponsor of the event so please stop by, say "Hi!" and support this local restaurant! Link to Perk Place

Below is a message from the Oil Creek Trail Runs Race Director, Tom Jennings, that he sent out last week. Please review it again and thanks in advance for your cooperation and working together this weekend:

LIGHTING / DISTANCE - With this deep snow I am pretty sure I will have to take the hikers at 10 AM on one or two loops of the northern 5 mile loop between Jersey Bridge and Boughton acid works / suspension bridge. We can do the 5 mile loop in reverse after doing it once if we want more "fun." :-) But I've been in the park nearly every weekend the past two winters either taking GPS readings or training for the McNaughton Park 150 miler, and the trails can vary between a few inches deep and knee deep depending upon the slope you are on. It is typically a hike, not a run, in these conditions. The past two winters it appeared as though I was the only person in the park as the trails were pristine and I had to do trailblazing all of the time, but the interest in the race has gotten a few more folks out on the trails this winter and they might not be quite as bad. But they will still be very challenging with the limited traction in deep snow.

Therefore, those of you attempting the 50K, if we don't have a thaw between now and 2/27 and the snow is this deep and slow going, be prepared to do a lot of hiking and have lighting in case you go longer than you expected. It is very tiring to be trailblazing in loose and deep snow so you may not be able to go as far as you thought. Be prepared to have to return in the direction you came to or be with a group knowledgeable on how to get back the shortest route in case you tire out. It normally takes me 6.5 to 7.5 hours to make a loop in good weather and when I'm in 100 mile race shape. So in this deep snow, I suspect I could not even make the loop even once in that deep of snow, or if I did, it would take me a LONG time. Even the bike path is deep in snow and that is difficult to go miles on that... I've done it before and can tell you this from personal experience the past two winters.

Elite and local runners - please share your experience on the trail in the past few weeks so people are aware of the conditions.

If you have snowshoes they may be more appropriate than trail shoes / spikes if we don't get a thaw.

SAFETY - I recommend traveling in groups. There are still wild animals in the park so be mindful of that as well. Be careful as an emergency rescue will be next to impossible as the bike path is impassable in winter, as well as Miller Farm Rd is now maintained in the winter, it is the road that separates the north and southern half of the park. Bring a whistle just in case. Have a cell phone in case there is an emergency and one of your group members can get to a high point where there is cell phone service.

BATHROOMS (or lack thereof) - In addition, unless I rent a portable toilet, there will be no toilets in the northern half of the park. Wolfkiel Run bathroom near Miller Farm Rd is the northern-most restroom that will be available as the porta-john at the Jersey Bridge parking lot near Drake Well Museum and Titusville is removed during the winter. Plan accordingly with toilet paper / wipes. There are no restrooms at the middle school either. So before you arrive in the morning, you may want to stop at McDonalds or the like to use their restroom and get a hot chocolate. If people reply and let me know there thoughts, I could rent a portable toilet for the Jersey Bridge parking lot at the northern end of the park and about 1.25 miles from the middle school.

XC Ski trails - reminder to stay off to the side of the red loop XC ski trail on the east side of the park, it is the first several miles just north of Petroleum Center. You will see the ski marks and the red tree markings. A lot of work goes into these XC ski trails, please don't ruin them by running in their ski tracks.

Have a great rest of the week, everyone, eat some pasta on Thursday and Friday, and come out ready to have FUN!!!! When the fun stops, head on over to Perk Place!

Save the LHHT bridge!

The Laurel Highlands Hiking/Snowmobile Bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike has been part of the current trail system for more than 30 years and is critical for the trail system to be complete. This bridge has been closed indefinitely due to structural deficiencies resulting in unsafe conditions.

Please support the repair or replacement of this bridge so outdoor enthusiasts may continue to have full use of the trails. The closure of this bridge limits tourism and greatly impacts local businesses and teh economy in this region.

This petition will be sent to the DCNR, Governor Rendell, Richard A. Kasunic (Senator), Mike Reese (Representative) and Carl Walker Metzgar (Representative).

Congratulations to Lloyd and Andrea!

Recently, NEO Trail Member, Lloyd Thomas married Andrea Berninger in one of our favorite park areas, the Brecksville Reservation. A walk through the woods, music by Carlos Jones, and a wedding ceremony in the place they love. All the best to you both and many, many years of happiness and miles together!

After their wedding, they even hosted a celebration group run through the Reservation with friends on the trails. The cake below is a great example of their passion for running as well as their toeing of the line of the rest of their life...together.

Presque Isle Endurance Classic

Kurt & Brian at last year's event
This Saturday, NEO Trail members Kurt Osadchuk and Brian Musick will be participating in the Presque Isle Endurance Classic in Erie, PA. This event is a 12-hour run which takes place on a scenic 1 mile loop next to Lake Erie. The primary purpose of this event is to promote cardiovascular fitness in a safe, relaxed and friendly environment and to allow individuals the opportunity to run/walk a distance beyond that they have previously acheived or set a personal goal that is meaningful to them. There are no trophies or prize money.
This event was started 29 years ago by some of the founding fathers of the Erie Runners Club to test the endurance of some of the local runners. It still stands today because of the tireless efforts of Rick Ferko and his long time volunteers. Rick's battle with cancer ended shortly after the 2006 Endurance Run. Rick's family and friends wished to continue this run as a lasting memorial that would exemplify his life. The application form for this run includes a selection for contributing to Rick Ferko's Spirit of Social Work Scholarship, since it is funded soley on individual contributions. The fee for the run itself is only $10 and includes chip timing and aid.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea

The National Parks: America's Best Idea
Premiere: September 27th, 2009

2009 Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic 50K & 25K

Another year has come and past for NEO Trail's annual event, Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic, held in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, OH. This past Saturday was the 5th running of the 50K event and the second year since the 25K event was added. The weather was perfect for runners with clear blue skies and a high of 71 and low of 43.

Several records were set this year including 113 total finishers (71 in 50K, 42 in 25K) and new course records for the men's 50K and 25K as well as the women's 25K.

Jacob Draa cut the tape first in the 50K with a new course record of 4:02:39. Michelle Ellery won the women's race in a time of 5:25:30. For the 25K, Alex White set a course record 2:04 and Bonnie Hartman set the female's record in 2:19:54.

The number one tactic, if you really want to race well, is to run really, really, really a lot. Hard work always works better than hardly working. You have to make your dreams your goals and then take that first step and practice them. What goes into practice comes out of practice. Thoughts need practice, too, so practice winning thoughts.

Examples:
-If you don’t follow your dreams, you might as well be a turnip.
-Some people buy a Mercedes, some people are a Mercedes.
-If you never go fast, you’ll never go fast.
-If you fall off your perch, FLY!

"Running is a lot like life. Only 10 percent of it is exciting. 90 percent of it is slog and drudge."
-David Bedford, English distance runner who sometimes ran 200 miles a week in training

September 1st
"I feel the earth and the wind and the trees. I feel its spirit. It puts me in the moment. I feel the rhythm of the race. It's like music. When the rhythm gets dissonant and chaotic, it is either a jazzy driving force behind me or demons inside me."
-Gabriel Harmony Jennings, talking about winning the 1,500 meter

September 2nd
One must pay the price.

A person must earn the right to set lofty goals. By that I mean one must be realistic, do the homework, pay the price and accept the sacrifices involved.
-Dave McGillivary

September 4th
"I love running cross-country... You come up a hill and see two deer going: 'What the hell is he doing?' On a track, I feel like a hamster."

Anniversary Poem, from a OH Man to his PA Woman

Collards is green, my dog's name is Blue and I'm so lucky to have a sweet thang like you.
Yore hair is like cornsilk a-flapping in the breeze. Softer than Blue's and without all them fleas.
You move like the bass, which excite me in May. You ain't got no scales but I luv you anyway.
Yo're as satisfy'n as okry jist a-fry'n in the pan. Yo're as fragrant as "snuff" right out of the can.
You have some'a yore teeth, for which I am proud; I hold my head high when we're in a crowd.
On special occasions, when you shave under yore arms, well, I'm in hawg heaven, and awed by yore charms.
Still them fellers at work, they all want to know, what I did to deserve such a purdy, young doe.
Like a good roll of duct tape yo're there fer yore man, to patch up life's troubles and fix what you can.
Yo're as cute as a junebug a-buzzin' overhead. You ain't mean like those far ants I found in my bed.
Cut from the best cloth like a plaid flannel shirt, you spark up my life more than a fresh load of dirt.
When you hold me real tight like a padded gunrack, my life is complete; Ain't nuttin' I lack.
Yore complexion, it's perfection, like the best vinyl sidin', despite all the years, yore age, it keeps hidin'.
Me 'n' you's like a Moon Pie with a RC cold drank, we go together like a skunk goes with stank.
Some men, they buy chocolate for Valentine's Day; They git it at Wal-Mart, it's romantic that way.
Some men git roses on that special day from the cooler at Kroger. "That's impressive," I say.
Some men buy fine diamonds from a flea market booth. "Diamonds are forever," they explain, suave and couth.
But for this man, honey, these won't do. Cause yor'e too special, you sweet thang you.
I got you a gift, without taste nor odor, more useful than diamonds...
IT'S A NEW TROLL'N MOTOR

Frustration is the first step towards improvement. I have no incentive to improve if I'm content with what I can do and if I'm completely satisfied with my pace, distance, and form as a runner. It's only when I face frustration and use it to fuel my dedication that I feel myself moving forwards.

"It's elevating and humbling at the same time. Running along a beach at sunrise with no other footprints in the sand, you realize the vastness of creation, your own insignificant space in the plan, how tiny you really are, your own creatureliness and how much you owe to the supreme body, the God that brought all this beauty and harmony into being."

MMD 50K

Last weekend, NEO Trail members Bob Combs and John Dewalt took part in the MMD 50K in New Hampshire. Many argue that the event is the most difficult 50K trail race in the country!

The course traverses New Hampshire's White Mountains taking runners over the Northern Presi’s before running over the Cats and Carters. The Presidential Range, pictured below (click to enlarge), is a series of peaks named after prominent figures and Presidents of the 18th and 19th centuries. Completing all the 4,000+ peaks from one edge to the other has become known as the Presidential Traverse.

About 15 runners finished the trail race, including Bob in just over 16 hours and John in 24.5 hours. For a detailed report of the day, click here for Steve Pero's report.

When I'm 3/4 of the way through a tough ultra, wondering why I'm out here doing something (again) that at the moment really doesn't seem like any fun at all, I invariably end up answering the question gnawing manically at my brain by responding, "This is what I do.

This is who I am. That's why.

When running 30 miles+ isn't just something you do occasionally, but becomes part of your own self-image, then you can call yourself a REAL ultrarunner. And you won't need to tell anyone else and you won't care what anyone else thinks.

You really wouldn't want to know what they think about it anyway!

My will shall shape the future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man's doing but my own. I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.
-Elaine Maxwell

It's not over for me though. I will be back. I will test my soul again. I will push my limits. I thank God everyday that I am still here to do that. I can't tell people how to live, how to train, what to take for nutrition, or what they should and should not do. I can tell you this. Don't wait until tomorrow to make the decision to do that something you have always thought about doing. Don't put it off any longer. Tomorrow your life my change drastically. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be the one with a heart problem. But to be honest, I'm glad I do. Now I can really test myself and find out what I'm made of. What I am trying to tell you is this... If you are thinking about doing something tomorrow, do it today instead.

I've realized that to finish you have to really, really want it. Then when you reach that point in the race where you say 'what the @#$ am I doing here?' you can say 'finishing'. If you don't really, really want to finish, you reach that point in the race where you say 'what the @#$ am I doing here?' and you answer, 'holy crap, I don't know, I'm going home.' -John H. I hadn’t really been aware of it. Not it’s weight or its form or its size. But the burden of doubt and anxiety I had carried with me from the start was formidable. My realization of its very existence came only when I began to dimly feel that burden getting lighter. As I came down off of Kern’s Mountain I was ahead of my schedule. I felt great. I didn’t feel even close to crashing. It evidently wasn’t going to rain anytime soon. My confidence swelled to fill the void as my fears floated up and away into the late day sun.

Summer Buckeye Trail 50K

This past weekend several club members participated in the 15th annual Summer Buckeye Trail 50K, which is an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Oak Grove pavilion in Brecksville, Ohio. The weather was unseasonably cool this year with highs in the upper 60s and even some rain. A nice break though from previous years where it has been sunny and in the mid to upper 80s. Once again, Vertical Runner was able to organize another quality event and finishers of this year's event were treated to a new finishers medal in the shape of the Buckeye Trail blue blaze.

Here is the list of N.E. Ohio Trail Club members who finished this year...

Dave Peterman - 4:59:29 (20th overall)
Stephan Kremer - 5:13:39 (34th overall)
T.J. Hawk - 5:17:11 (35th overall)
Ron Ross - 5:23:16 (39th overall)

Ultrarunning seems a lapse in reason, taking something difficult and multiplying it by four. I considered applying the ultra logic to my chaotic days at home with the children. 'Hey honey,' I might say. 'I had a terrible day with the kids. Tomorrow I might invite four times that number of children over for the day. Not only that, but I will keep them up all night and do everything with just a headlamp.'

A lot of people want a shortcut. I find the best shortcut is the long way, which is basically two words: work hard. As I see it, if you work more hours than somebody else, during those hours you learn more about your craft. That can make you more efficient, more able, even happier. Hard work is like compounded interest in the bank. The rewards build faster.

-Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

When man runs and his worn out body and tired muscles fervently oppose his mental perseverance to continue the race, I'd say that's a pretty big challenge. My question is, how hard do you push yourself to demonstrate your own character?

-Scott Peragine

July 1st
As you know, going from a person who worked out constantly to a person that just had heart surgery is a big change. This has given me a lot of time to think. One thing that always comes back to my mind that I am going to share with you is this..... What good does all of this actually do. What does running ultra's, biking, lifting, ect. What does it do for you? Where does it get you?

For me, the answer is this. It's not about what you do in life. It is about what you don't do. The truth is running has not got me anywhere in life. I don't enjoy it. I hate it really. It certainly hasn't made an income for my family. And it definitely takes up a lot of my spare time. So why do it then? Because I can. When I was running 100 mile races back to back weekends, people never understood. They thought I was crazy. They told me how injured I was going to get. But I didn't care. I still don't. Tomorrow is never promised to you. If I looked back on those times now and didn't do the Plain 100 because it was too soon after my other race, I would kick myself. Now I can look back and say. I'm glad that I did what I did when I could.

I am not saying that this is how everybody should be. What I am saying is that I believe everybody should push themselves to their limit. Whether it be in life or in sport. If not, you will wake up one day and your limits will have been determined by other factors. Health, family, work, ect. While you have it in your power to do something, do it. Don't wait until that opportunity gets taken from you. I know I'm not.
-Goggins

I've always sort of thought that at Hardrock you sort of live your entire life in a single day," said Roch Horton, a five-time finisher. "You'll be the happiest you'll ever be in your entire life, whenever that was, here at Hardrock. And the most ragged, lowdown, just desperate, decrepit, degenerate, sore - you're going to feel that, too, in one day, all in one continuous experience.
